Frequently
Asked Questions
1.
What's the deal?
Aeroscholars and The Hobby Quest have teamed up
to deliver the EAA's Aeroscholars program directly
to high schools a complete "computerized"
and "in the classroom" aviation experience
complete with your own personal instructor/pilot,
textbooks, software and everything else you need
to get going.
Based on the EAA's successful AeroScholars program
located in Oshkosh, WI and now combined with the
efforts of The Hobby Quests' after school enrichment
programs we are now going to offer the full AeroScholars
program everywhere in the Lower 48 Continental
US (48 CONUS).
Our mission is to provide high schools and their
students the opportunity of a lifetime, through
our gateway into the world of aviation and the
path to a Private Pilot license or aviation related
school or career.
2. Can this course be instructed at my
local high school?
Yes. The only requirement for a new high school
or facility is to have 6 or more students enrolled
in the program. We will then will bring a certified
THQ instructor/pilot to your school and begin
classes.
3. I'm in high school student and I want
this course, can you help me?
Yes! If you are interested in having the complete
AeroScholars after school program at your own
school or facility, just contact
us. The Hobby Quest staff will work with your
school or facility and will assist you to get
the program started.
4 . Does this have to be in a high school?
No. We can provide the complete AeroScholars program
anywhere in the 48 CONUS and to anyone ages 14-19.
We just need a group of interested aviators which
consists of a group 6 or more and a facility to
administer the classes. This is the perfect opportunity
for groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA's,
JCC's, Home Schoolers or anywhere where groups
of young adults interact and want to learn about
aviation.
5. Does the course require a textbook?
Yes. Both courses use the textbook, online/CD
materials, classroom instruction and lectures
with your own personal instructor/pilot. Books
include; Aerospace the Journey, published by the
Civil Air Patrol and the FAA publication, The
Private Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical
Knowledge.
6. Can I receive credit for the course?
Yes. You may be able to obtain high school science
elective credits for the course, depending on
the requirements and curriculum of your local
high school. Also, if you successfully complete
this course with a C- or better, you may be eligible
for 2 transferable college credits and 3 transferable
college credits for the second course. These credits
are provided through Utah Valley State College,
an accredited four-year college with an extensive
aviation degree program.
7. How old do I need to be to fly an airplane?
There is no specific age requirement to fly an
airplane, but you must be 16 to solo an airplane
or 17 to obtain your Private Pilot Certificate.
The objective of this course is to create a foundation
of aviation knowledge that will be useful in your
math and science studies or help you on your way
to becoming a pilot or as a professional in the
aviation industry. The Part 2 course will fully
prepare you for the FAA Private Pilot written
examination.
8. When do I get to fly in a light aircraft?
Each student will be eligible to take to the air
as an EAA Young Eagle. The Hobby Quest will help
coordinate your flight with a local EAA Chapter
Pilot and get you a ride that you will never forget.
9. Will the course cost any extra money
beyond the course tuition cost?
No. Even The Young Eagle's flight in this course
is paid for through the volunteer efforts of members
of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
10. How much time should I plan to finish
this course?
The time required for this course is similar to
the time required for traditional courses in high
school. You will spend approximately 17 weeks of
study, averaging 3 hours per week to complete
the course. You can pick and choose when you want
to complete your Part 1 and Part 2 courses during
the school year. You must complete Part 1 course
to advance to Part 2.
